For the mother nobody has ever asked about herself

Most Mothering Sunday presents are about her being your mum. This one is about the twenty-odd years before that, which almost nobody asks her about.

Give her an hour of somebody being interested in her own life rather than another bunch of flowers. Mothering Sunday is 7 March 2027, which is late enough in the year that a birthday or Christmas gift can carry through to it, and early enough that if you decide in January there is time to have the first conversation before the day itself.

  • What they openSomething to open that says the conversations are arranged. You arrange it with me rather than buy it here, so it can be as understated or as substantial as suits her.
  • Start byNothing is being printed for the day, so there is no deadline. If you want the first conversation to have happened before Mothering Sunday, January is the month to message.

The thing daughters and sons tend to miss

You know your mother as your mother. That is a specific and quite narrow acquaintance, and it starts on the day you were born.

What you usually do not know, in any detail, is the twenty or thirty years before that. The job she had before the one you remember. What she thought she was going to do. Who she nearly married. What her own mother was like to live with. Which of her friendships mattered and why they stopped.

People assume they know all this because it has been mentioned. Mentioned and asked about properly are different things, and the difference is usually about four hours of somebody’s attention.

Why it lands better than flowers

Not because flowers are wrong. Because the flowers say thank you for being my mum, and this says I am interested in who you were before that.

Mothers in particular tend to have spent decades being the person who asks everyone else how they are. Being on the other side of that is unfamiliar enough that most of them protest about it for roughly ten minutes and then talk for two hours.

She will say it is a waste of money

She will. That objection has its own page, when they say there is nothing to tell, and it is worth ten minutes before you offer.

The short version: do not tell her that her life is fascinating, because she will hear that as flattery. Ask her about one specific thing instead, ideally something you genuinely do not know, and let her be the expert on it.

If your mother has died

Mothering Sunday is one of the harder days for people in that position, and a lot of what is written about the occasion ignores it entirely.

It is still possible to have something written, from photographs, letters, paperwork and what people remember. Building a story from what is left explains what is usually enough, which is more than most families assume.

Some people do this deliberately around Mothering Sunday or the anniversary, because it gives an otherwise difficult day something to be for. There is no rush on the deciding. There is some rush on the material, and old voicemails in particular are often the first thing to go when a phone contract is closed.

If you would rather do it yourself

You do not need me for this.

Mothering Sunday is a day when you are likely to be in her house anyway, with a reason to be sitting down. An hour with a phone recording on the table, while the two of you are washing up or looking at photographs, will get you further than a planned interview ever would.

How to record a conversation with a parent is the whole method, free, including where to sit and how long to go on for. If you try it and find that having the recordings is not the same as having something anyone will read, that is usually the point at which people get in touch.

How the date actually works

Mothering Sunday moves with Easter. In 2027 it falls on 7 March.

If you decide in January, there is time for the first conversation to have happened before the day, which is a better present than a promise.

If you decide in late February, give the intention and start afterwards. March is a perfectly good month to begin something unhurried.

If it is the week before, do not turn it into a deadline. Send flowers, and start this properly in April.
