For the parent who says they do not want anything
They have enough jumpers. What they usually have not had is anybody sitting down and asking them about their life.
Give the conversations rather than an object. What you hand over on the day is a voucher, which you arrange with me rather than buy on this website, and the conversations themselves start in the new year once the house is quiet again. There is no manufacturing deadline to miss, because nothing is being made for Christmas Day.
- What they openSomething to open that says the conversations are arranged. There is no checkout on this site, so tell me roughly what you have in mind and we sort the rest out between us.
- Start byNo date to miss, because nothing is being printed for the day. The earlier you message, the more relaxed December is.

Why this one lands differently
Most presents for an older parent are a variation on something they already own. This one is not a thing at all. It is somebody taking their life seriously enough to write it down, which is a different category of gift, and it is usually the first time anyone has offered.
The part people underestimate is what happens in the room. The conversations themselves are the present. The book that arrives later is the record of it.
What to do if they say it is a fuss
They will say that. Almost everyone does, and it is rarely a real no. When they say there is nothing to tell is the whole of that conversation, and it is worth reading before you decide.
The short version: do not tell them their life is fascinating. Ask about one specific thing instead, and let them be the expert on it.
What you actually hand over
This is the part people want pinned down, so here it is plainly.
Nothing on this website can be bought. There is no basket and no checkout, because this is one person’s work rather than a shop, and what suits a family with three months’ notice is not what suits a family with three weeks’. So you message me, tell me who it is for and roughly what you want to put towards it, and we agree between us what goes in the wrapping paper.
That is deliberately flexible rather than unfinished. Some people want something substantial to hand over. Some want the whole thing kept quiet until after the turkey. Some are giving it jointly with two brothers who live in different counties. Tell me which of those you are and I will make it work.
If you are giving it with brothers and sisters
Christmas is the one time of year when everybody who would be paying for this is in the same room, which is worth using. Agreeing it over the pudding takes ten minutes. Agreeing it by message in February takes three weeks and usually one person giving up.
If there are several of you, say so when you get in touch and we will sort out the practical side between us, rather than leaving one person to chase the others.
What actually happens after Christmas
The gift is the beginning of a process, not a delivery date. In the new year we talk about the person, agree how many conversations and when, and the recording starts. Nothing needs to happen on a particular day.
Or do it yourself, in the quiet week
You can do this without me, and the days between Christmas and the new year are the best window in the calendar for it. A phone, a quiet room and one afternoon will get you further than most people expect, and the house is already full of the right people.
How to record a conversation with a parent is the whole method, free. If you try it and find that having the recordings is not the same as having something anyone will read, that is usually when people come back.
One thing though: Christmas Day itself is the worst possible day for it. Too much noise, too many people, everyone tired. Boxing Day morning, one on one, is a different matter.
